Meditating on God's Word

As I look around the culture today, much emphasis is put on meditation as a way of relaxation. Many health spas teach meditation as part of their prescription for a healthy lifestyle. While I agree that meditation in and of itself is healthy, I disagree with their definition. Most teach to meditate on either a peaceful place, flower blossoming, or just an emptying of the mind. Sitting cross legged on the floor, closing your eyes, chanting a mantra, and taking deep breaths constitutes meditation.

In the Bible it tells us something different. Instead of trying so hard to relax by emptying our mind, we are to meditate on the Word of God. That could be a Biblical scripture or just simply to ponder on what God in His glory has done through us. The purpose of meditating on God's Word is to rest the mind and listen for the voice of God. We are continually busy with living life; working, cooking dinner, playing with the kids, and helping with homework. It is easy to see why we can not hear his voice, we are perpetually occupied by other things. The Lord says " Be still and know that I am God".

When Mary was visited by the angel of the Lord he explained she had found favor with Him. She was to have the Christ child. She grasped the information, held it in her heart and pondered on these things. Another example of this in the Bible is found in Psalms1:3. David tells us to meditate on the Word day and night then we will be strong, bearing fruit in everything we do.

We require quiet time alone with the Lord to hear His voice, so He might speak in reference to His will for us. Meditating on His Word provides the Holy Spirit one-on-one time with us. As believers, things can be revealed to us that can greatly impact our lives through meditation. It's an excellent way to seek understanding on the passages of the Bible that we don't thoroughly have knowledge of. On more than one occasion comprehension has come through meditating on the word, it can give us a Godly perspective we might otherwise have missed.

I encourage everyone to put God first, if only for 15 minutes each morning. If nights work better, great, schedule that time or use both if you can manage.  It would be profitable if you formed a habit of  meditation, and devoted a set time and place for these conversations with God. I find after doing so, for the last 10 years, I would  be lost without the time I devote to the Word. It sets the tone for my day as well as provides peace at night. What better way to start the day or end it?

Let me know how it works for you, have you had a great revelation? Or just enjoy the practice? How has it improved your life? Leave a comment and let us know.
